The fate of the separate post office operating in the Parliament Building has come up several times in recent years, but according to the latest information, it still operates to this day, albeit in a limited capacity.

Here are the details about its operation and recent events:

• Current status: The parliamentary post office remains open, but it is not public. It is exclusively available to those working in the Parliament Building, Members of Parliament, and official staff. This is why you will not find it in public post office locators.
• The 2022 closure wave: When the Hungarian Post closed 366 post offices nationwide in November 2022 due to rising energy prices, the parliamentary branch received an exemption.
• The „1358 Budapest” postal code: This special postal code is reserved exclusively for the Parliament Building, indicating the importance of in-house postal handling.

A Historical Curiosity

During the construction of the Parliament Building (1885–1902), postal and telegraph services were already planned from the outset, as fast communication was an essential condition for legislation. For most of the 20th century, this functioned as a fully-fledged but internal unit.

Although traditional mail correspondence has declined, the presence of the post office in the building remains justified for the „electronic courier post” and the physical forwarding of official documents as part of the administrative workflow.
